Variable Speed Blower: A Worthy Investment For Your Furnace

A number of appliances in residential or work places can be quite pricey and so it’s only wise to do a good background check and some research to determine whether it is a worthy investment.

An air conditioning or furnace system is one such appliance. To start off, simply explained, unlike the conventional single speed blower motor that has been in existence for a long time, variable speed blowers are flexible. The electronically commutated motors (ECMs) which are the speed variable blower motors in the furnace or air conditioner have been compared to a cruise control system in a car. The motor is adjustable and will run smoothly to your desired setting or speed. Now the questions that begs is: Is it worth investing in? The benefits explained below will help you answer the question.

Benefits of a variable speed blower

Cost efficiency – If you own or owned the traditional fan motor, you have an idea of how much the system consumes electricity leading to high electricity bills. The ECM system uses about a third of the electricity- saving you on utility bills. Therefore, the higher initial costs get balanced out and proves to be a cheaper investment in the long run.

Better air quality - Air circulation is important in determining how effective the air filters do their job. If the air motion is too high, the filters may not be able to capture contaminants so well. The variable speed blower motor circulates the air slowly enabling the filters to capture more air contaminants.

Flexible and robust – When the weather patterns are on the extremes, it is prudent to have a system that is capable of tolerating and adjusting to the extremities. The ECM systems can comfortably do this offering you greater reliability.

Low noise levels – Most people like their homes or workspaces quiet enough to rest or work. The variable speed blower ramps up the motor speed slowly hence keeping noise levels down.

Low maintenance – As mentioned earlier, the ECMs gradually increase speed, rather than the sudden on/off bursts. This reduces the wear and tear, and stresses on the motor components thus the system last longer than the conventional blowers. A 10- 15 years of service is the expected ‘shelf life’. In addition, no constant lubrication is need as the ECMs make use of true ball bearings.

Humidity and comfort – Humidity is good, however, too much or too low humidity is a recipe for discomfort. Variable speed blowers slowly circulate the air around the house ensuring better humidity control and gets rid of too much humidity, thus enhancing comfort.

In conclusion, the variable speed blower motors have higher initial costs in comparison to the standard on/off fans. However, they offer higher efficiency and energy savings. Further, the level of comfort is enhanced as the system smoothly controls the humidity levels. Variable speed motors are also given a ‘thumbs up’ in noise reduction.
